Bird cards

Here are my bird cards. All to do with birds blending in with the environment and not standing out :).

<-these are sketches I made
with grayscale markers.

This is my layout for the bird project!

APRIL

This is my Calendar piece for the month of April. I was interested in portraying earth day in terms of animals. Too often we forget that animals are so much a part of the earth, and we focus on human needs. I had a lot of difficulty with this- it was hard to get my mind to try to twist the animal forms.

Other ideas I had:

This is my final fork project (It finally uploaded right, and not alien colors :B). I was interested in the origin of forks, as it relates to other utensils, and asked the question, which came first, the fork or the spoon?

fork 2

Okay, so this is my second idea... I found out that before forks were used, people primarily used wooden spoons, and the earliest forks in the U.S. were called "split spoons". This made me wonder if the spoon came first, which led me to the whole chicken or egg concept. I later found out that spoons have been used since paleolithic times... but I'm not sure most people would know which came first; the fork or the spoon.
I am using analogous colors for this, and possibly making the background yellow or very pale orange. I'm also going to experiment with water.

Project 2: "Forks"

This is my sketch for the fork project, obviously. I was interested in the idea that so many people use the same fork over and over again. I got this idea from the part of the text about the chinese visitor who would not use his English host's fork because it "may have been in hundreds of mouths before mine, and among them, possibly that of my enemy. The idea is repugnant to me." The next time you're at a restaurant or the dining hall, ask yourself, who used this fork before me? Weird...
This sketch isn't in good shape. it's wrinkled (because I used water), and I'm not sure about the color choice. Oh and on the fork are a bunch of words describing people, such as man, woman, vegetarian, taxi driver, etc.
I'm going to expand some of my other ideas and maybe post them, just for kicks. I'm kind of iffy about this idea.

Bookplate

This bookplate, titled "Giraffe's in Dresses" is a linoleum print. It is a reflection of my memory of images in children's books, and popular collectibles of the time (Particularly those fuzzy animal "action figures" in dresses).
